What is a SCSI host adapter? A SCSI host adapter connects a SCSI bus to a computer. The host adapter bridges the physical and logical division that separates the SCSI bus from the host computer's internal bus. SCSI host adapters contain all the electronics and firmware required to execute SCSI transactions, and often include a BIOS that not only allows the host system to boot from a SCSI device, but also facilitates configuration of the host adapter. Typically a device driver, linked to the operating system, controls the host adapter itself.
An HBA hardware device, such as a circuit board or integrated circuit adapter, provides I/O processing and physical connectivity between a host system, such as a server, and a storage device.
Host bus adapters (HBA) are integral to effective enterprise data storage and are necessary to optimize a SAN infrastructure. The host bus adapter or HBA, transmits the data between the host device and the storage system in a SAN (serial attached network) and takes on the tasks of storing and retrieving data, thus allowing the host microprocessor to focus on improved server performance. HBAs are mostly used in Fibre Channel SAN environments and are also used for connecting SATA and SCSI devices. The emergence of iSCSI in the past few years has led to the development of another type of host bus adapter, the Ethernet HBA.
